Did I ever know her? No. But I also never knew my own grandma. I only have one image of her in my mind's eye, much fuzzier than the larger than life portraits found across Salt Lake County. Growing up I never felt sad to not have knowm my grandma Patty. People would offer condolences shared a decade late, but I would reply, "I never knew her." As a decade turned into two, I realized I did have a sadness. Not the crushing heart break from a sudden loss, but a disappointment with a greying maternal love I might of had. So it is now with Julia. Her smile laid atop a floral background kept company only by an epitaph denoting the pain of a grieving family, is perhaps the beginning of a fuzzy memory for a grandchild who will someday realize what they missed all along.
